Meet Demetrice

Dr. Demetrice Smith-Mutegi is the Director of Science Engagement and a research collaborator for G.S.I. She is an assistant professor of science education in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. She teaches K-12 foundation courses and secondary science and math methods to preservice teachers. Before entering higher education, she was a STEM educator in North Carolina, Maryland, and Indiana public schools.

Dr. Smith-Mutegi's current research interest focuses on investigating the motivations, beliefs, and experiences of Black students in STEM, as well as factors that influence Black STEM teachers' career decisions. Demetrice has completed studies in science education at Morgan StateUniversity (Ed.D.) and East Carolina University (M.A.T.), as well as an undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
